Sony Pictures has dropped the first teaser trailer for Resident Evil, its newest live-action take on Capcom's iconic horror franchise.
Set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026, the film tells an original story centered on Bryan, a medical courier whose routine night spirals into a relentless fight for survival as a horrifying outbreak plunges everything into chaos.
We Resident Evil fans have been through plenty of ups and downs with the movies over the years, so it's only natural to be cautious. As for what to expect from this one? Let's take a look at the trailer first.
Bryan's Fight to Escape Raccoon City
At the center of the story is Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier just trying to get through an ordinary delivery job. Unlike familiar Resident Evil figures like Leon, Chris, or Jill, he isn't a trained fighter or a hero, just an everyday guy working to make a living.
When he's suddenly thrown into a world of zombies and bio weapons, he's forced to survive pure chaos with no preparation, much like Ethan Winters struggling through the Baker incident in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
I’m really hoping this gives us a more grounded perspective again ,seeing someone like Bryan actually go through the horror of a outbreak in the Resident Evil world, scared, untrained, just trying to survive, a bit like in the direction of Resident Evil 3.
It’d be great to get some nods to the games too, like green herbs for healing or even herb mixing like in the classics. Little Easter eggs like that would go a long way.
And hopefully we'll see some proper bio weapons such as Hunters, maybe something like a Tyrantt enemy like Mr. X type stalker constantly hunting Bryan while he tries to make it out alive.
Zach Cregger Talks About His Vision for Resident Evil
Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) promises "horror, not action" for his Resident Evil movie. He says:
"You think to yourself: 'I have to go down this long, dark hallway. I've got two bullets. I know there's a lot of crap waiting for me in there, and it's all really bad. But I have to go.'"
He aims to stay faithful to the games, crafting a story that drops us right into survival horror and steadily raises the stakes.
Where I Stand Right Now
I must say, this all looks and sounds really promising. It's what I've been seeking for a long time in a Resident Evil movie. However, it's also taking a risk by centering the story around an entirely new character going through the Raccoon City incident.
I can't wait to finally see it in theaters, especially as part of Resident Evil's 30th anniversary celebrations and as we slowly start getting in the mood for the rest of the Year.
