At Gamescom 2026, I had the opportunity to get hands-on with Persona 4 Revival, Atlus’s newly announced remake of the legendary Persona 4. Having never played an entry in the Persona series before, stepping into this world for the very first time was a fascinating experience and one that might just convince other newcomers to finally give the franchise a shot.
Inaba Shining in New Colors: Fully Remade for Modern Systems
The foggy, charming town of Inaba has never looked this good. With Persona 4 Revival, Atlus has taken the beloved classic and given it a stunning, modern coat of paint that bridges the gap between classic nostalgia and cutting-edge visual design, bringing it right on par with Persona 3 Reload.
From the moment you boot up the demo, the upgrade is undeniable. The character models, environments, and sleek user interface have been meticulously rebuilt from the ground up, trading the technical constraints of the past for a vibrant, modern aesthetic, all while keeping that signature Persona flair intact.
The combat feels just as stylish. When you strike an enemy's weakness to trigger an extra turn, the Baton Pass system allows you to pass that turn off to a party member for an immediate damage and stat boost. If you manage to knock down every enemy on the field, you’re rewarded with an All-Out Attack, the series' iconic cooperative finishing move. It looks spectacular in motion, and it's accompanied by an absolute powerhouse of a soundtrack.
I have to admit, right after my demo session, I immediately added several Persona tracks to my Spotify playlist.
When you aren't fighting Shadows inside the TV World, you're essentially living out high school life in anime form. You manage your daily routine using a calendar system, hanging out with friends to level up your Social Links (which directly powers up your Personas), joining school clubs, studying for exams, taking part-time jobs, and exploring Inaba to build your personal stats.
While I can't speak on the full narrative arc just yet, the slice of life paired with supernatural mystery makes me want to dive deep into the story when it launches next year. Funnily enough, right before my Persona 4 Revival appointment, I was playing Alien: Isolation 2, so switching over to Inaba was the exact relaxing, cozy vibe I needed to calm down. I can already see myself unwinding in bed after a long day, playing this on Nintendo Switch 2 just to tune out the world.
Final Impressions: A Newcomer’s Verdict
As someone who had never touched a Persona title before and probably wouldn't have under normal circumstancesthis preview proved why it’s always worth stepping outside your gaming comfort zone. I had always heard the overwhelming praise surrounding the franchise, but it simply wasn't on my radar until now.
If you’ve been on the fence just like I was, why not take the leap? With Persona 6 on the horizon, diving into Persona 4 Revival feels like the absolute best doorway into this universe.
