Announced on June 2, 2026 during PlayStation’s latest State of Play showcase, God of War: Laufey builds upon the series’ legacy while supplanting its protagonists with a different kind of warrior. This spinoff, that leans more into the franchise’s Norse roots, picks up long after the burial of Faye, the giantess whose life and death defined the relationship between Kratos and Atreus. According to the game’s trailer, she finds herself in an afterworld called the Everywhen, a realm where gods of all pantheons war against one another. It’s the first major change to the series’ status quo that doesn’t involve Kratos, but God of War’s latest addition may be bigger than its protagonist.

God of War’s formula proves to be flexible

Santa Monica Studio hasn’t rethought the series’ formula, but that doesn’t mean God of War: Laufey is a rehash of what came before. The game’s combat appears to be the most significant evolution, with Faye fighting enemies with a blend of speed and power that’s reminiscent of Kratos’ earlier years. She has a certain quickness to her movements that makes her more agile than the Ghost of Sparta. Faye’s moves appear to be a mix of the fast, acrobatic style of the Greek trilogy and the grounded but still powerful style of God of War (2018), a combination that looks to appeal to everyone.

It’s not just her attacks that set her apart; the game’s trailers also highlight a number of magical abilities that play off Faye’s supernatural heritage. The blend of combat techniques gives her character a certain degree of flexibility, which, according to the game’s director, was the intended effect.

A Realm Without Limits

The most remarkable aspect of the game, however, is not Faye’s fighting style, but rather the land of the Everywhen, which appears to transcend any one particular mythology.

The Everywhen is not limited to Norse cosmology, as the trailer makes clear. Faye and Kratos encounter a number of recognizable gods on their journey, but the realm seems to be designed to accommodate a variety of supernatural beings.

This development opens the door to some truly remarkable storytelling. The Everywhen, then, is the perfect setting for a new conflict that nonetheless fits within God of War’s broader themes of vengeance and sacrifice. If Santa Monica Studio is thinking even bigger, the very existence of the Everywhen could allow God of War: Laufey to evolve beyond the constraints of a single mythology.

More Than Kratos' Story

Even with these innovations, God of War: Laufey is still God of War, which means its story is as emotionally resonant as ever. Rather than rehashing the same old narrative of vengeance and violence, however, Laufey’s trailer emphasizes Faye’s relationships with others. She isn’t driven by a desire to conquer the Nine Realms because prophecy demands it. She fights because her actions will shape the fate of countless lives, not unlike her son. Even in death, Faye embodies the best qualities of a God of War protagonist.

That is not to say that Kratos is forgotten in the new title.

The developers have already said that there are more adventures in store for the Ghost of Sparta, so his appearances in Laufey are unlikely to be his last. Even aside from Kratos, the game’s early trailers suggest that God of War is poised to explore new ideas in its sixth iteration. It could be that God of War’s upcoming projects are following a similar pattern, gradually moving away from one overarching story while still building on the series’ themes and setting. It is a risky endeavor, but one that has the potential to breathe new life into the franchise.

The Final Verdict

With the potential for exciting new settings and a story that continues to emphasize emotional connection and sacrifice, God of War: Laufey looks set to deliver on the series’ promise of being more than just a superhero fantasy. Santa Monica Studio’s willingness to move beyond one of the most recognizable protagonists in gaming history is a bold move that should pay off in the long run. Even with many details about the game still unrevealed, the early glimpses suggest that Laufey may well be the beginning of a bright new future for God of War.
