The long-awaited rumors have come to a close. As shown during the 2026 Summer Game Fest, Shift Up - the South Korean studio behind the excellent 2024 action-adventure title - announced Stellar Blade: Blood Rain. As the sequel to one of Shift Up’s most successful games to date, Stellar Blade: Blood Rain will no longer be exclusive to Sony Interactive Entertainment, choosing to publish Blood Rain independently. As such, the highly anticipated follow-up will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S simultaneously at launch.
From Wastelands to City Streets
While the 2024 game saw Eve fight through a desolate wasteland to reclaim the reborn and corrupted Earth from the oppressive regime of the Naytiba, Blood Rain will see the return of a new protagonist named Evie. As part of a special forces unit, Evie is tasked with investigating the terrorist attack that has occurred in one of the many megacities ruled over by the Naytiba. As such, the setting of Blood Rain differentiates itself from the post-apocalyptic wasteland of its predecessor, introducing a much more urban and densely populated environment. The game director Kim Hyeong-Tae stated that the game’s largest city was inspired to a great extent by the actual megacity of Chongqing, China. With a dense system of high-rises, underground tunnels, neon lights, and slums, Evie will have to navigate the labyrinthine alleys and streets of the city while fighting through the oppressive regime of the Naytiba.

Fast Combat Returns, but With A New Style
Many of the core combat staples of the first game return, including fluid dodging, parrying, and quick time events. However, the combat system receives several large improvements that further differentiate Blood Rain from the first title in the series. Unlike Eve, who had little difficulty learning how to effectively wield the sword given to her, Evie must first learn the basics of close-quarters combat, using a set of power gauntlets given to her by her superiors. As such, Evie’s combat style focuses much more on brawling than it does on dexterous and fluid swordplay. As the story progresses and Evie gains more confidence in her abilities, she can equip alternative blade styles, including the high-frequency oscillating sword from the first game, allowing her to mix-and-match brawling techniques with the fluid slashes and parries seen in the first game.
Expanding On Shift Up’s Love Of Cosmetic Customization
One of the staples of Shift Up’s games is the sheer amount of customization one can perform for the game’s protagonists. While in the first game, players could equip a wide variety of outfits and accessories, Evie in Blood Rain will have even more options at her disposal. With a plethora of unlockable and rare outfits, nano-suits, and hairstyles, Evie’s customization loadout screen will be one of the deepest in the industry.
Production Status And Priorities For Blood Rain
As stated by Shift Up’s game director Kim Hyeong-Tae following the announcement, many of the foundational elements for Blood Rain have been completed. Art assets, characters, and the game’s world have all been largely completed, with the development team working on the game’s second half’s story and combat mechanics. In tandem with working on the game’s story, Shift Up has been hard at work on implementing Evie’s brawling combat system. While Shift Up has prioritized high-density environments over less optimized high-end graphics, they have been working to ensure that Blood Rain will run at a steady 60 FPS on launch hardware. As such, while a specific release window for Blood Rain has yet to be specified, it can be assumed that Stellar Blade: Blood Rain will see a wide-scale 2027 release to cement Shift Up’s status as a rising star in the action-RPG scene.
